Situated in the mountains of Logan, Utah State University is an institution specializing in agricultural and environmental fields. As enrollment grew, MGB+A was contacted to develop a viable outdoor space adjacent to the Student Center. Borrowing mood from the surrounding environment, a concept evolved to simulate a cascading mountain stream through a series of concrete terraces. Stop-risers encourage users to explore the coolness of the water and refresh themselves beside shaded study areas. Raised planters and multi-level landings effectively dealt with the existing topographic conditions and offer very interesting spatial treatments within this vibrant area. Heavy-timber arbors softened with vines complement the rustic construction of campus buildings and again link this urban-type space with its natural environment. The USU fountain plaza is a very popular campus landmark and one which each student savors for the experience and relief it provides.
