The design challenge here was to create a vibrant, lively, and safe place on former playground site closed for safety reasons. The city wanted to reuse existing elements as much as possible to save costs, conserve resources, and retain some memory of the previous design. MGB+A developed a concept for a forest using existing upright wood posts as abstract trees and adding climbing boulders, natural vegetation, a dry water course and pavilion. Elementary school classes in Salt Lake City were invited to design additional poles. The design opens up this space – bringing in light and air while connecting to a proposed amphitheatre and expanded lake dock. The garden is now a fun gathering spot for school groups, concessions diners, a group picnics.
